Right now I’m drawing “verbs” but there will be more pictures to be added later. I wonder how many verbs teachers introduce in class??? I’ve drawn around 33 verb pictures, but it looks like there will be more than at least 50. Of course this doesn’t include difficult vocabulary that advanced level students would use.

From 2011, English will be the mandatory subject in Japanese elementary schools. I hope my materials will help lots of new and old English teachers!

I’m going to publish this material page, too. I’d like to donate some of the profits I’ll be making to the needy people in this world. In this heat, I wonder how people in those countries are surviving…..I feel bad to use the airconditioner or drive and have more CO2 out in the air, which makes it more difficult for them to live without the airconditioners and cars.

I’m going to change my web design soon so all teachers and parents can view my site more effectively. Right now I have this blog space, but I’m thinking of changing it to categorize themes.

 The reason that I didn’t find any good ones was that they put big Alphabet and small Alphabet on the cards. For example, “A says a, a, apple”—had A and a written on the card. If they are aiming at students who can recognize and read alphabets, then this should be fine. However, if the students’ level or age is low, they should see only big alphabet or small alphabet only. Usually, most words are written with small alphabet letters, so phonics might have to be introduced after they remember big alphabet and small alphabet shapes and names.

 Hopefully, I’ll have a chance to make phonics cards for both students who can recognize and read alphabets, and students who can’t.

 There are lots of English teaching materials, but I guess all of them have advantages and disadvantages. I hope English teaching is going to be more productive and helpful for the learners and I wish to help making good materials, too.

1 This is a Japanese version to teach English to elementary school students (from 2011, English will be introduced as a mandatory subject at elementary school). 2 This is an English song books that lots of people wrote reviews on. The most reviews are giving two thumbs up! It has English songs as well as some ideas of fingerplay. Although some people say some fingerplays do not work with all the kids, but kids love to listen and sing songs in class and in the car, too. 英語の歌が収録されています。ほとんどの利用者の方が、絶賛していて、指遊びなど歌と一緒にできる遊びも書かれてあるので、子供がとても喜ぶそうです。車の中や、クラスの中でもいっぱい活躍しているそうです!　確かに、教えているときに歌になると突然元気になる子が多く、振り付けをすると、一緒に振り付けをしてくれるので、子供の注意をひくには歌は最高ですよ!もちろん、先生も親も歌わないといけないですけどね。

 3 This is a book for expressions & grammar of junior high school classes. It’s fun to teach grammar and expressions using games and flashcards. 中学生の英語表現や文法指導のアイデアワークブックです。ただでさえうんざりしてしまって中学で英語を挫折する人が多い中、ゲームで教えていくというのは画期的ですね。

4 This has lots of challengins vocabulary in it. There are similar words listed below one word, and it has example sentenses and explanations to help remembering the word. I have this book myself and I’m still using it to get higher scores on the TOEIC. I have this book because I need to keep and improve my English levels. Teaching English to beginners in Japan sometimes require teachers to use simple and easy vocabulary instead. I highly recommend this book to teachers who can speak well but cannot fully feel confident in their level.  学生のころや、留学時代には覚えていた単語がどんどん抜けていっている先生方多くないですか。TOEICで点数をとることはもちろん大切ですが、この本はそれだけでなく、ひとつの単語を覚えるのと同時に、似た単語や、例文があります。時間を計る欄もあって、メリハリよく勉強できると思います。英語教育をしている人が、中途半端な英語力で教えていてはだめですよね。毎日、少しずつでも、今よりもレベルアップできたら。。。素敵ですね!!

 When I was younger, I had a high school student who always wanted to talk about something unrelated to lesson subject. I was irritated once, because I couldn’t do the lesson. Luckily, she was the only student in the class. I asked her if she wanted to study or just came here to chat. Next day, I heard that this student quit. I didn’t know why.

Later I figured out that I was always trying to control the class and students. It’s a good thing, but I might have done it too much. This student came to my English school because she wanted to have fun in English. I should have had a counseling with her, and asked her if she was interested in talking about something small in class rather than studying difficult grammar. Come to think of it, she was a high school student. She must have studied lots of grammar at school and might have wanted to do something else. At school teachers are strict in Japan and students are subjected to a lot of pressure. At English school, there should be some freedom for her to take a deep breath, but I think I took it away.

However, it’s also unappropriate just to listen to your students’ wishes. If they are taking private lessons, then it should be fine. If they are taking lessons with other classmates, then lesson structure or school method are helpful.

Lots of schools nowadays let the students talk, and teachers shouldn’t talk too much. However, if the class consists of silent students, does the same method that worked with active classes actually work? In this case, you might want to add some games or materials to the class. As long as you are not ignoring your school method and if you are just “adding” some more to it, I think the class is actually for the students, not for the school.

When we think about what the class is for, it always should be for students. Teaching method is just one, but there are more than two students in class.

 Lots of great artists imitated their senior great artists’ work first. It’s because they know the work is great. But gradually they add their way to draw or compose to make better arts. Lessons are the same.

いい先生になるには、常に情報をキャッチできるいい感覚をもっているべきだ。

「耳」—を使って、生徒のいまの状況をキャッチする。それは先生同士でもオフィス内で生徒の情報を交換するのもいい。

「目」—生徒のクラス内、外での様子を目でみる。疲れていそうだなとか、何か信号を出していないかを常に目で確認する。

「口」—英語でも英語以外のことでも、助けられることがあったら、一番いい言葉を選んで伝えてあげる。ちょっとした「癒し」の

　　　　　言葉を言ってあげるのもいいかもしれない。今の時代、いやされることを目的として英会話学校に来ているひとは多い。

　　　　　インターネットでレッスンを受けられるのに、わざわざ時間を使ってその学校まで行くのは、先生や学校のスタッフにいろ

　　　　　んなわがままを聞いてもらいたいからだ。

「心」—中でも一番大切なのがこれ。これがなかったら、どんなに言っている言葉が素晴らしくても、行いがすばらしくても、な

　　　　　にも相手の心に訴えるものがない。心VS心でなければ、生徒の心はつかめない。

情報をキャッチするというのは、生徒のことだけでなく、自分自身が成長しないといけない。テレビを見て今の日本や世界で何が起こっているか、いつも知っておくと、先日のべたロビートークにも花がさく。もちろん、「知っている」ことをひけらかすのもよくない。生徒はただでさえ、先生と同等に英語ができないことで格差を感じている人もいる。どんな相手でも—大人も子供も、私はよくいろんな話があると、「知らない」ふりをよくしていた。たとえば、TV番組のことで話がでると、「何それ?」ととぼけてみたり。嫌いな教科の話をしている学生の生徒がいたら、「すごいね。。。私はその教科苦手だったんだよー」「教えて」とよく言っていた。それで英語以外のことで、生徒が自分を先生よりも上に位置づけることができる。もし、生徒との会話がいつも一方的になってしまう人は、ぜひ今度この方法を試してほしい。

常に、「自分」を出すのでなく、生徒を主体にして自分がそれに対して何ができるのか。。。なかなか時間がない私たちだからこそ、常に考えていたい課題だと思う。

そんなクラスをうまく行かせるためには、まずロビートークをおすすめします。

<キッズレッスンのロビートーク>

まずは子供と仲良くなるために、いっぱい話を聞いてあげること。どんな話でも大人同様まずは英語で話しかけてあげて、そのあとは英語で毎回何か話しかけてあげる。母親も、そのロビートークをするために早くレッスンに来て、周りの生徒や保護者と仲良くなり、たとえ子供がなかなかレッスンに入らなかったり、先生の言うことを聞かなかったりしても、母親同士のつながりを大切にするのもコツ。親は何をみているかというと、第一に子供の反応、次に子供の伸び、そして最後に子供と先生のそれぞれの相性だと思う。子供の気持ちを早くつかむことができればそれに越したことはない。

子供の好きなキャラクターや、幼稚園、小学校であったことを話してくれるように、いろんな番組など観ておくといいかもしれない。「先生にも教えて」とか「新幹線乗ったことあるの? すごいね。先生乗ったことないよー」など相手を立てるのは子供も大人の生徒に対しても同じ。先生を尊敬すべきという時代は昔で、生徒の気持ち、立場を尊厳するのがまず第一だと思う。

私が教えていた時に一番大切にしていたのは、できない生徒の母親がもし叱りつけてばかりいたら、それを注意していました。(言葉は選んで)。なぜかというと、子供にとっては英会話教室は遊びの延長。その場所で毎回母親にしかられていたら、英会話教室に行くと母親にしかられるというイメージしかつかない。逆に、ほめられる場所であったら誰だって行きたいはず。では子供は誰にほめられると一番うれしく、効果があるのか? もちろん教師にほめられるのもうれしいが、母親が褒めるのが一番うれしい。事実、そうゆう子供を何人も私は見たことがあるし、その表情は教師にほめられているときより輝いていた。一番効果的なのが、母親の前で子供をほめてあげること。また、他のクラスメイトの母親がほめてましたよー、と他の人からの褒め言葉も親と子供両方にうれしいことだ。もちろん事実を伝えることも大切です。

母親との関係を理解した上で、特に幼児のクラスの前には、母親と一つだけ約束事を作って、それを守らせるという方法がよい。子供はいっぺんにすべてのことができるわけではなく、協調したりすることも覚えなければならない。幼稚園に行き始めたばかりの子に、小学生のように話を聞くことを要求する母親を見たことがあるが、それだけ期待が大きい分、子供がそれに応えなかった場合、ショックもストレスも大きい。なので、ひとつだけ約束事がつくり、それができたら思いっきりほめてあげる。子供はそうやって一年かけて英語とマナーを学んでいくのではないでしょうか。そのためのフォローは、忙しいレッスンの合間のロビートークで少しずつ行うのがよいと思います。

<大人の生徒のロビートーク>

 大人の生徒は、子供と似たところがあります。子供のクラスをコントロールできる先生は大人ではそこまで苦労しないと思います。元気のないクラスに、テンション高く頑張りすぎれば、余計に白けられてしまいます。大人しい生徒にはおとなしいなりに、Yes/No questionをしたり、レベルによってはWh-questionをしてもいいと思います。話すことよりも聞くことがもしかしたら好きかもしれないのに、英会話はできるようになりたい矛盾は仕方ないのですから、先生が話して、listeningをまずは鍛えるという方法もあります。もちろん、レッスン中はそれではレッスンにならないので、ここでロビートークが活躍します。

生徒同士のつながりを大切にするのも、私は心がけていました。意外と生徒同士が名前すらお互い知らず、レッスンに一緒に同席しているだけ、ということがよくありました。なので、答え合わせのときには、生徒が他の生徒を指名して答えを言ってもらう、という方法をとっていました。その時、必ず名前を呼ばないと、誰に聞いているかわからないですよね。なので、お互い次第に顔と名前を覚えていきます。それはロビートークでもできます。自己紹介は毎回だれか新しい人が入る度にしていました。

実はこれ、先生自身にも役立ちます。何十人も教えていると、時々度忘れしてしまう名前。ただし、サーピース業で、相手の名前を忘れるということはあってはならないことですよね。だから、生徒に他の生徒の名前を「彼の名前とニックネーム覚えている?」なんて聞いてみるのもいいですよ。その日のレッスンはそれで名前を忘れることはないですよね。

ロビートークの内容は、これをすれば必ずいいというものはありません。ただ、例としては

1 自己紹介

2 宿題チェック

3 前回のkey expressionsやvocabularyを使って話をしてみる

4 先生自身の話をしてみる

5 game

特にゲームはもりあがりますね。映画をみたり、雑誌を読んだり。。。普段と同じことをして、生徒をリラックスさせてあげる。そして外国人講師がロビーにいたら、極力英語で話すようにしましょう。でないと、外国人もさみしい思いをしたりしますし、生徒も日本語を話してばかりいては、なんのためにレッスンに来ているかもわからず、英語に慣れるまでに時間がかかり、レッスンの3分の2くらいになって初めて英語の頭にきりかえる。。。という状態になってしまうかもしれないです。

ロビートークこそ、生徒のフォローがしっかりできる、レッスンよりも大切なレッスンなのではないかと私は思います。

今日のサンプルは「動詞」。一日にする動作表現をいくつかビックアップしてみました。

Teaching is fun, but difficult sometimes. I think almost all the people that visit here can relate to this.  However, teaching kids is not that bad. Here is my experience.

When I started to work for an English school several years ago, I didn’t know how to control kids, let alone teach them. Classes were just a caos, and I always felt guilty because I didn’t teach, I just shouted to them “Be quiet! Listen to me!” “No, no! Don’t do that!” One day, a questionair from a mother said “The teacher has a great English level, but she doesn’t know anything about kids.” This hurt me. I knew my lessons weren’t productive, but this mother was too frank.

Later, I had a small talk with this mother about what she thought I didn’t know about my kids students. She said that I wasn’t really showing any affection towards kids, when kids were talking to me.

I started to pay more attention to kids who interrupt and destroy the lesson procedure. Then I realized that I was just trying to teach or control them, but wasn’t listening to them at all. Kids sometimes bring small dust or hair on the carpet and say “here you are.” It really doesn’t matter for adults, but for kids, these trivial things were important. They have very small and narrow sights, but their imagination is huge. I said “thank you” instead of saying “don’t pick that up, it’s dirty.”

Gradually I tried to listen to them and give at least one comment to them. Then they opened their hearts to me and began to tell me more about them. The topics weren’t always related to the lesson, but it was easier to get back to the lesson when I replied them. I felt they began to like me more, which built up trust, love and affection between us.

Of course this wasn’t easy. I had to stand in their position to see from their aspect. Luckily, my mental age wasn’t too old, so it didn’t take time to understand what kids usually like to see or hear. I went to toy shops and observed kids there. I watched kids in the park, too.

Teaching is not teaching. If you love kids but not teach kids, maybe you’ll be able to enjoy the lesson soon. Without regaining kids spirit, teacing will always be just teaching.

 さっそく昨日野菜のイラストを縮小してみました! 他にもキャベツや、ニンジン、ピーマン、大根、などなど冷蔵庫にあるものを描いてみました。すべてここにラインナップするのは今週末です。お楽しみに!

もう一つ、昨日サンプルで描いてみました。感情を表す形容詞を絵にしてみましたよ。ここでは三つだけとりあげておきます。

こんな感じのものがあります。他には　angry, disappointed, thirsty, hungry, sleepy, sad, upset, surprised, hot, cold, excited, shy, sorry, scared, relievedを作ってみました。できあがったら今週末にラインナップしますね。乞うご期待!!

意外に絵を描くのは時間がかかりましてですね。明日、色をつけましてここにいくつかサンプルをのせたいと思います。正式にすべてが載るのはもう少し後です。みなさん、もうしばらくお待ちくださいね。

ではここで、英会話の先生をしていたときに経験したことを少し書いてみまする。

ある日子供を教えていたときのこと。うまくいかず、いらいらがつのっているときに限って、子供って小さなゴミとか持ってくるんですよ～　　子供の目線は低く、小さいですから、カーペットのゴミとか髪の毛とかわざわざ持ってくるんですよね。当時キッズを教えることに慣れていなかった私は、授業参観のアンケートに「英語力は高くても、子供を扱うという点でもっと勉強が必要だ」と書かれました。ぐさー!!ですよ、その瞬間。涙でました

でもそのあと気がついたんです。子供をしっかり教えるには、子供の味方になり、味方になるには子供の見方をしなければならないって。。。子供にとってはクラスの時間なんて関係なく、時間の観念がないんですよね。あ、ここではもちろん幼児のことを書いています。だから、そんな子供との時間を大切に、教えようとしては絶対心を開いてくれない。幸い、私は精神年齢が低く(笑)、遊ぶことに関しては子供と同じことをするので(飯事とかするわけではないですよ～)、すぐに子供と同じ背になりましたね。人見知りする子、懐くのが早い子、いろんな子がいますが、まずはその子がどんな子なのか。。。そして、自分はその子のことをすごく好きになりたいんだよ、という気持ちが一番だと思うんです。子供は敏感で、先生から嫌われていると思うと、絶対に心を開いてくれません。

子供の気持ちに戻るには、子供がよく行く場所にいってみること。たとえばおもちゃ売場、公園とかです。そしてそこでの子供の様子をよく観察してみました。そしてレッスンのときには、とにかく「大きな声」「ハキハキ」を心がけてましたね。おかげで腹筋鍛えましたよ。

子供を教えるのは大変だと誰もが言います。でも、そんな人に限って、子供と遊ぶのは得意じゃないですか? 教えるのが難しいけど、子供といるのは好きだという人は、あっという間にいい先生になれると思います。コツは自分は先生ではないと思うこと、同じ目線に立つには、同じことをしてみないとわからない、そう思います。
